Oxbow is a small family hobby kennel located at the base of Mt. Hood in the lush Willamette Valley of Oregon. We began showing and breeding English Springer Spaniels around 1998 when our own children were leaving home. After enjoying several field bred springers when our kids were growing up, we had added a companion springer to our home at that time. One thing led to another after we got our companion (bench) springer and we attended a couple specialty dog shows where these beautiful dogs were being exhibited and we became excited about giving it a try.
We have enjoyed using sires from some of the very best kennels as we strive to include the qualities we desire in our dogs. We appreciate beyond measure the help and advice of those breeders.
When we first began we used professional handlers to show several of our dogs as we observed and learned how the system worked. After that we have owner/handled all our dogs, except two, who were co-owned with other families to their championships. Today we have 16 AKC Champions, with another almost finished for an average of one or two per year. We've also completed the Grand Champion title for some of our dogs and we've had 3 Sporting Group 1 winners. All have been owner/handled except one. We've won many year-end club awards and always strive for excellence in our breeding program. If you go to our pages about each dog, you can see their accomplishments, but more than that, each one is loved and lives as part of our family here. Raising and showing dogs is a lot of work, but we've visited many little towns and places we'd never have gone if we'd not taken this path.
It's been a joy to follow the lives of our springers placed in companion homes and to share in the joy that those dogs have brought to their families. We've been so fortunate to make many lifetime friends because of the common bond with the dogs and we enjoy hearing about them all as they go through their lives. We're always glad to give any guidance or support along the way if requested. Some of our dogs have worked on obedience, rally, or agility. They tend to be very intelligent dogs.
Today we live with our champions and enjoy going to shows. We occasionally have a litter when we wish to keep something for ourselves. We research pedigrees, complete health clearances, and strive to do our very best.
Our dogs are bred for conformation (show ring) and obedience and are wonderful family companions. Some do enjoy casual upland bird hunting, but a field bred springer is a more appropriate choice for serious hunters. Our Springer's enjoy being with their families and do well inside the home. They enjoy participating in family activities.
